Guitar Harmonic Minor Scales - Guitar Music Theory

Guitar Harmonic Minor Scales

Here we are going to know about all the Harmonic Minor Scales and their Patterns in a very simple way. You only need one simple Harmonic Minor Scale formula to form any Harmonic Minor Scale. If you know the Major Scales then it becomes very easy to know all the Harmonic Minor Scales.

What are Harmonic Minor Scales?

Harmonic Scales are the same as Natural Minor Scales only the difference is Harmonic Minor uses Major 7th instead of Minor 7th. And that note becomes augmented second between the sixth and seventh degrees. These Harmonic Minor Scales are mostly used in Jazz Music and Neo-Classical Music.

Even though you don't need to know Minor Scales as well. You just need the Major Scale to form any Harmonic Minor Scale you want.

You Can just use the Major Scale and make b3 and b6 (flat third and flat sixth) and keep other notes as it is and guess what you got your Harmonic Minor Scale.

Harmonic Minor Scale Formula Using Major Scale:

[ whole - half - whole - whole - half - (whole + half ) - half ]
or
[ 1 - 2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - b6 - 7 - (8)]

So in this formula, the whole step is one whole step to another note (e.g. - C to D, B to C#, Eb to F). And the half step is half steps to the next note (e.g. - C to C#, B to C, Eb to E). And the whole + half step is like counting the whole step + half step (e.g. - A to C, B to D, Eb to F#).

By using this formula you can form any Harmonic Minor Scale you want.

Now, Let's see the example of the C Major Scale as a reference to form the C Harmonic Minor Scale.

[ C - D - E - F - G - A - B - (C) ]

Now let's use the formula

[ whole Step - half step - whole step - whole step - half step - (whole step + half step) + half step ]

Now let's see what we are getting after applying this formula

[ C - D - Eb - F - G - Ab - B - (C) ]

Now you know how we got the C Harmonic Minor Scale by using the formula with the reference of Major Scale. Similarly, you can apply this formula to any note and get that Harmonic Minor Scale easily.

Harmonic Minor Scales in Guitar:

A Harmonic Minor Scale - [ A, B, C, D, E, F, G#, (A) ]

B Harmonic Minor Scale - [ B, C#, D, E, F#, G, A#, (B) ]

C Harmonic Minor Scale - [ C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, B, (C) ]

D Harmonic Minor Scale - [ D, E, F, G, A, Bb, C#, (D) ]

E Harmonic Minor Scale - [ E, F#, G, A, B, C, D#, (E) ]

F Harmonic Minor Scale - [ F, G, Ab, Bb, C, Db, E, (F) ]

G Harmonic Minor Scale - [ G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb, F#, (G) ]

So now you got the idea of how we get all the Harmonic Minor Scales on Guitar by using just one simple formula and Major Scale reference without remembering all the scales. If you have any questions, let me know in the comment down below.
